Low Back Conditions We Specialize in Treating
-
Acute low back pain is the most common injury seen throughout the musculoskeletal system. Low back pain is multifactorial, but is most commonly associated with poor sustained postures and excessive strain to the lower back when lifting / training. This type of pain can be treated conservatively with physical therapy.

Chronic low back pain (now referred to as persistent low back pain) is low back pain that has lasted beyond 3-6 months. This can happen for many reasons, but it is believed that psychological and social factors, along with lifestyle habits & behaviors have the ability to influence chronic low back pain. This type of pain can be treated conservatively with physical therapy. There is also mounting evidence that psychotherapy is an excellent supplemental treatment. Our therapist will refer you to a trusted provider if it is deemed a necessary part of your treatment.Description text goes here

A lumbar disc bulge is when the disc material is pressing up against the outer part of the disc. A lumbar herniation is when that disc material protrudes past the outer layer. Bulges and herniations are not inherently bad, as many people have them and don’t have any pain. It’s when the disc material irritates the nerve around that area that the patient may feel low back pain and pain that shoots / radiates down the leg. Sitting typically feels the worst to this patient population, and standing/walking makes the symptoms feel better. You may also feel numbness and/or tingling sensations traveling down your leg. These injuries typically occur from poor sustained postures or in weight lifting / training. These injuries can be treated conservatively with physical therapy. Depending on the acuity and intensity of your pain, our therapist may refer you to a medical provider who can prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to optimize healing and movement.

A laminectomy is a surgical procedure when the lamina of the vertebrae is removed to create more space for the nerves in your spine. A microdiscectomy is when part of the disc is removed surgically. It’s important to receive physical therapy treatment after these procedures in order to relax the muscles around the spine. Our therapist will help you to regain flexibility, strength and nerve mobility.

The commonly known term is sciatica, but we call this lumbar radiculopathy. This is when you have pain that radiates down your leg. It happens when the nerves around your spine are aggravated by inflammation or disc material. Sciatica can exist with or without actual low back pain. You may also experience numbness and/or tingling down your leg, as is true with disc bulges or disc herniations.

This condition is when part of the spine (the spinal canal) narrows and there is less space for the nerves to travel. As a result, patients with lumbar stenosis experience numbness, tingling, and/or burning pain that travels across the back or down the leg. Walking typically aggravates patients with lumbar stenosis and sitting feels better for this population.
